This painting was inspired by one of my early morning outings for a walk on the beach as a passing bank of rain clouds was in the distance leaving behind a refreshed peacefulness. There is always anticipation that builds as you are approaching and passing through the dunes and get your first glimpse of the breaking waves on the shore line. It was like entering through a magical portal into another dimension.
We used to make frequent trips to the beach, taking the kids out to play for hours in the surf and sand. I would spend immeasurable time sitting at the edge of the waves just to feel…listen…take in all the relaxing sensations as my kids ran and played. I also loved to comb the beach at the high tide line for sea glass, pretty driftwood, shells and other unique items like shark or whelk egg cases to show the kids. (You can maybe see the Science teacher coming out here). It was so incredibly relaxing and emotionally cleansing to just let go and be at peace.
There is just something so therapeutic and healing about spending time at the beach…just the sensation of the warm shifting grains of sand beneath your feet, the rhythmic sound of the breakers near the shore coupled with the continuous caress of the waves against your skin, and the intermittent calls of the shorebirds carried by the “Summer Breeze” …this is my happy place. It is now a place I visit mostly through my paintings.
